CSA FAQ

What is a CSA?

CSA is an abbreviation for Community Supported Agriculture. When you become a member of our CSA, you are buying a "share" of the chestnuts that we produce each season.

For four, five or six weeks (depending on the share), we will have the season's freshest chestnuts ready at your pickup location of choice.

CSA members, by paying for a share up front before the season gets underway, support us as we plan and invest for the upcoming harvest. Your payment helps us expand our partnerships with local farms, restock supplies, and build and repair the equipment and storage that keep chestnuts fresh. Members also share the risks associated with farming and poor harvests due to unpredictable weather conditions, pests, natural disasters, etc. In return for their commitment, members receive beautiful shares of what we harvest throughout the growing season and gain knowledge and satisfaction of being able to participate in local agricultural production. By purchasing direct from our farms, members support their local economy, foster community support,  join us in becoming stewards of the land, and help local family farmers like us continue to operate.

How do I sign up?

Choose a share on our shop page and check out. Your place is secured once payment is complete.

Where and when do I pick up my share?

Pickup locations, days and times will be shared via our newsletter. We confirm partner locations on a rolling basis, and every member gets an email with their location and time window before the first pickup.

When does my share begin?

Start dates follow the harvest, so all dates are approximate until we confirm them by email. Add our email address to your contacts so updates do not land in spam.

Can my order be shipped?

Chestnut Boxes and the Holiday Share can ship to Connecticut, New York and New Jersey addresses for a fee at checkout. Orders normally ship within two business days. After shipping, delivery typically takes 3 to 7 business days, but arrival dates are not guaranteed. The weekly Chestnut Share is pickup only.

I'm going out of town. Can I move my pickup?

Please send a friend or neighbor to pick up in your place. We cannot extend shares or move pickups to a later week, because harvest and packing are planned around each pickup date.

Will my share be held if I miss my pickup?

Each host location decides whether a share can be held overnight. Our hosts volunteer their space, so they are not responsible for shares left after the pickup window. Unclaimed shares are donated.

Can I add extra chestnuts to my share?

Yes. Add a Chestnut Box to your order, or contact us before your pickup and we will add extra chestnuts to your share.

What happens if an option sells out?

Every share and box is limited. When an option sells out, join the waitlist on its page and we will email you when it opens again. Boxes restock every Saturday at 8am.

If my pickup falls on a holiday, should I still go?

In most cases there are no pickups on major holidays. We will email members about any change to the schedule.

How should I store fresh chestnuts?

Fresh chestnuts are perishable. Refrigerate them in a breathable or perforated bag as soon as you get home, and enjoy them within two to three weeks.

What if weather or pests affect the harvest?

By joining the CSA you share both the bounty and the risk of the season with us. We do everything we can to protect the crop, and we will keep members informed if weather or pests affect a harvest.

Will you be opening more pickup locations later?

We're always looking for more CSA partners. If you know of a potential site (office, business, home, etc.) that would like to host CSA pickups, please contact us. Please know we need 10 or more people to open a new pickup location.

When will all the pickup times and locations be released?

We are working with a number of partners to provide the most convenient pickup locations and times for members. Pickup locations and times are updated on a rolling basis as final confirmations are made. Please check back on our website for the most up-to-date information.

I'm not receiving your emails. What should I do?

Check your spam folder and, in Gmail, the Promotions tab. Then add our email address to your contacts so future updates reach your inbox.
